Performance of a new atomistic geometrical model of the B-DNA configuration for DNA-radiation interaction simulations

چکیده
We have recently developed an atomistic model of the B-DNA configuration, up to the 30-nm chromatin fiber. This model is intended to be used in Monte Carlo simulations of the DNA-radiation interaction, specifically in conjunction with the Geant4-DNA extension of the Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit. In this work, 11449 parallel chromatin fibers have been arranged within a cube mimicking a cell nucleus containing about 6.5x10 base pairs. Each atom in the model is represented by a sphere with the corresponding van der Waals radius. Direct single, double and total DNA strand break yields due to the impact of protons and alpha particles with LET ranging from 4.57 to 207.1 keV/μm have been determined. Also, the corresponding site-hit probabilities have been calculated.

An investigation of neutron direct damages at energies of 0.1-2 MeV on the DNA molecules with atomic structure deduced using Geant4 toolkit
This study proposes a method to estimate RBE of fast neutrons using Monte Carlo simulations. This approach is based on the combination of an atomic resolution DNA geometrical model and Monte Carlo simulations for tracking particles. Atomic positions were extracted from the Protein Data Bank. The GEANT4 code was used for tracking the secondary particles generated by fast neutrons during their in...
متن کاملCalculation and evaluation of energy deposition and S-value caused by low-energy electrons in a multicellular model using Geant4-DNA
Today, targeted radiation therapy (TRT) methods for cancer treatment, besides the goal of completely destroying the target tumor, attempts to prevent nearby healthy cells from exposure to ionizing radiation as far as possible. Hence, short-range charged particles, such as low-energy electrons that are suited to achieving these two goals together, play an important role in TRT and so, adoption o...

Background: Development of safe radioprotector is a challenging task. In this study radioprotective effect of sucrose has been demonstrated in calf thymus DNA (CtDNA). Sucrose is a free radical scavenger and also acts as osmolyte and therefore can influence the water activity around DNA and effects of radiation on DNA. Hoechst 33258 was used to probe the possible alteration in physicochemical p...

Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics in house-code of a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) has been developed. The conservation equations are numerically solved using finite volume technique. One of the important goals of this research is the investigation of the variation of bipolar plates width effect on the fuel cell performance compared with the conventional m...
متن کاملReduced DNA damage in tumor spheroids compared to monolayer cultures exposed to ionizing radiation
Background: Several cell lines when cultured under proper condition can form three dimensional structures called multicellular tumor spheroids. Tumor spheroids are valuable in vitro models for studying physical and biological behavior of real tumors. A number of previous studies using a variety of techniques have shown no relationship between radiosensitivity and DNA strand breaks in monolayer ...
